Why Are Learner Drivers Failing?

Growing rate of learner drivers failing practical tests in WA

Learner drivers are failing practical tests at a rate of more than 150 a day.

WA learner drivers are failing practical tests at a rate of more than 150 a day.

Figures provided to The West Australian by the Department of Transport reveal a growing percentage of learners are failing assessments — with more than 57,500 unsuccessful across the State last year.

Last year’s failure rate of almost 55 per cent was up from 54 per cent in 2016, 52 per cent in 2015 and 44 per cent in 2013. Learner drivers in country WA are more successful than those in the city, with 41 per cent failing.

DoT driver and vehicle services general manger Steve Mitchinson said the most common reason for failure was being underprepared.

“The Department of Transport encourages learner driver candidates to get as much supervised driving on as many different roads, weather and traffic conditions as possible,” he said.

Many candidates want to sit their test as quickly as possible but are simply not ready.

“Other top reasons candidates fail include lack of knowledge about road rules, not fully stopping at the stop line or rolling through, speeding and failing to undertake physical head checks of vehicle blind spots.”

Supervised drivers must complete 50 hours of supervised driving before taking the practical test.

Mr Mitchinson said technology that tracked and recorded assessments through audio and GPS was aimed at improving testing. “It is intended that the data collected will help better inform future learner drivers of the areas of learning upon which to focus,” he said.

1. ROUNDABOUTS
Roundabouts help manage traffic flow and improve safety by slowing the speed of vehicles. Whether you’re turning left or right, going straight, or making a full-turn at a roundabout – here’s what you need to know: When entering a roundabout, always give way to any vehicles already in the roundabout. On multi-lane roundabouts, obey the directional arrows on the road. Turning left On approach, indicate left from the left lane. Stay in the left lane and exit the roundabout from this lane. Driving straight ahead You don’t need to indicate on approach. Enter in either the left or right lane, stay in and exit from the same lane. Indicate left when you’ve passed the last exit before the one you intend to use. Turning right or making a full turn On approach, indicate right from the right lane. Stay in the right lane and exit the roundabout from this lane. Indicate left when you’ve passed the last exit before the one you intend to use. Parent Supervision Courses

All Zones Driving School is currently in the process of structuring a parent supervision course to assist them in providing teens with the important factors of road rules and safe driving practices.  This will primarily help reduce the costs but still provide the much needed  driving practice that is necessary for students to become safe drivers and successfully pass their practical driving assessment.

DRIVING COURSES

All Zones Driving School has introduced a Tandem Driving Lesson.

When learning to drive there are many components involved for a student to become a safe competent driver.  Passing the driving test is only a small part of the learning process.  Once on “P” Plates a student goes from being supervised to an unsupervised driver.  Currently “P” Plate drivers are statistically considered to be amongst the highest group to be involved in accidents.  Our aim with the Tandem Driving Lesson involves both a practical and theory element to a driving lesson.  Our instructors have found that when two students  are having a lesson: one student is the driver, the other student is in the back seat observing driving instructions, then we reverse the roles, the students retains far more information.

Whilst even on regular single lesson there are practical and theory elements, the observation elements during the Tandem Lessons have proven to be extremely beneficial.  This is not only a very productive way of teaching it is also very cost effective.

Costs

$80 for 90 minutes, two 45 minute lessons ($40 per person)
